Special collection Institute of Lleida Studies

  • Artefacts: Volumes from the reserved collection.
  • Date: 1526-1716.
  • Damages: Presence of PvA glue (Polvynilic Acetate) on the spines. Dirt, wrinkles and creases. Damage caused by PvA glue repairs: tears, parchment distortion, breakage of thongs and endband cores.
  • Conservation treatment:

Former repairs of PvA glue removal. PvA glue is not solule in the wide majority of solvents thus removal was held mechanically.

Cleaning and flattening of parchment wrapper.

Structural damage reinforcement: Broken endband cores and thongs have been extended with sewn reinforcements of alum tawed leather. I have always sustained that: in movable areas, better sewing than pasting!

Tear mending and flattening of endpapers.

Replacement of broken/lost ties, bone locks andlost or very damaged endbands.

  • Conservators: Chiara Comaro, Rita Udina.
BeforeAfter

At first glance it looked like they had the usual damages: dirt, distortion of parchment and some creases. But tears are generally expected at the joints, rather than in the middle of the spine. Such creases are the result of excessive strain within the spine caused by the addition of PVA glue.

Endband sunk in PvA glue cement

Inner broken spine. Endband pushed away by a wave of PvA glue. After the liquid stiffened it has retained the endband forever on the synthetic cement.
