Map by Blaeu cartographers

  • Owner: Private collection.
  • Artefact: Map of Silesia (region between the present Germany and Polland). Hand-coloured print. Coloured with watercolours, gouache and golden powder.
  • Author: Blaeu brothers (“Johannis & Cornaelius Blaeu”).
  • Date: 1630.
  • Damages: Central fold, kraft paper patches, tideline on lower edge, high discolouration due to foto-oxidation (light exposure) which is masked by the guard all along the fold. The guard is only visible on the back, and it would have been used to hold the folded map into a book-block. The mat has a tide-line and is cockled.
  • Conservation treatment: Dry cleaning, patches and guard removal, wet cleaning by slanted capillary wash, flattening. Conservation of the original mat. Adaptation of the frame, providing it with a 98% UV filtered glass. Replacement of the backing of the frame for a conservation board.
  • Conservator: Rita Udina.
