Conservation of stationery limp vellum bindings with flap

  • Owner: Regional Archive of Baix Empordà (La Bisbal, Girona, Spain), Government of Catalonia.
  • Object: Two stationery manuscripts on laid paper. They have limp vellum bindings with tacketing onto exterior leather supports (see heading image). Both with flaps, are sewn on leather tackets (see header image) and have clasp button of alum tawed leather. Turn ins have alum tawed leather tackets.
  • Date: 1719-1752 (llibre de rendes) and 1713-1852 (llibre de canalar, the one shown on the images of this post).
  • Damages: wrinkles, parchment loss, damage in the flaps, breackage of the alum tawed turn in tackets and button clasps. Folios have discrete damage: water tide lines, mould stains of former biological damage.
  • Conservation treatment: Dry cleaning, consolidation and flattening of parchement covers. Wet cleaning of first and last folios, tear mending. Restitution of tie buttons and leather tackets. Re-sewn.
  • Conservators: Se Hee Song, Rita Udina.
