Conservation of stationery limp vellum bindings with flap

CASTELLANOCATALÀ

  • Owner: Regional Archive of Baix Empordà (La Bisbal, Girona, Spain), Government of Catalonia.
  • Object: Two stationery manuscripts on laid paper. They have limp vellum bindings with tacketing onto exterior leather supports (see heading image). Both with flaps, are sewn on leather tackets (see header image) and have clasp button of alum tawed leather. Turn ins have alum tawed leather tackets.
  • Date: 1719-1752 (llibre de rendes) and 1713-1852 (llibre de canalar, the one shown on the images of this post).
  • Damages: wrinkles, parchment loss, damage in the flaps, breackage of the alum tawed turn in tackets and button clasps. Folios have discrete damage: water tide lines, mould stains of former biological damage.
  • Conservation treatment: Dry cleaning, consolidation and flattening of parchement covers. Wet cleaning of first and last folios, tear mending. Restitution of tie buttons and leather tackets. Re-sewn.
  • Conservators: Se Hee Song, Rita Udina.

🇬🇧 Some details of the conservation of a #limpvellum bound #manuscript posted some days ago [👉🏼Check link in Bio]. Attention to the reinforced tackets: #parchment + leather. We could re-use the originals holes of sewing, both in the spine and the turn-in, so they needed to match exactly after flattening. The tackets were reproduced because many of the several damages. However, I am happy and proud of the result! It wouldn.t be the same if it weren't for the participation of the excellent korean conservator SeHee Song @sonsorosong 🙌🏼. . 🇪🇸: Algunas imágenes de detalle de la restauración de un #manuscrito #encuadernaciónflexible en pergamino, un proyecto que publiqué ya hace unos días [👉🏼 enlace en la Bio]. Atención a los refuerzos del cosido de dos capas: #pergamino + piel. Pudimos reutilizar los agujeros originales, que atravesaban el pliegue y el lomo, y tenían que coincidir exactamente después del aplanado. Los refuerzos se preprodujeron por estar demasiado rotos. Aún así, contenta y orgullosa del resultado! Que no habría sido el mismo de no ser por la excelente restauradora coreana SeHee Song @sonsorosong 🙌🏼 . Pareu atenció als reforços del cosit en dues capes: #pergamí i pell. Hem pogut reutilitzar els forats originals, que travessaven tant el llom com el plec del folre, i per tant calia que coincidissin exactament després d’aplanar. Els reforços es van reproduir perque estaven massa malmesos. Amb tot, contenta i orgullosa del resultat!
