Conservation of oversized velvet album book

  • Owner: Military History and Culture Center (Barcelona).
  • Artefact: “Atlas histórico y topográfico de la guerra de África, sostenida por la nación española contra el imperio marroquí en 1859 y 1860” (Historical and topographical atlas of the african war, sustained by the spanish nation against the morrocan empire between 1859 and 1860). oversized velvet book (52 x 70 x 4,5 cm). Album with contemporary bookbinding, engravings and folded plans and maps.
  • Date: c. 1865.
  • Damages: Broken spine and covers, discolouring of velvet. Stained leafs with mould, tears, and cracks.
  • Conservation treatment: Textblock conservation treatment (cleaning, washing, mending tears, infilling, flattening), reinforcing of the sewing, bookbinding conservation treatment preserving original materials (re-binding). See detailed explanation fo this conservation treatment→.
